Overview Word Of Mouth Leith

Discover Word Of Mouth Leith, a charming neighbourhood café at 3A Albert St, Edinburgh EH7 5HL, United Kingdom, where hearty breakfasts, European-style café dishes, freshly prepared lunches, and carefully made coffee create an inviting start to the day. From a food blogger’s perspective, Word Of Mouth Leith captures the character people look for in Edinburgh’s independent café scene: compact, unpretentious, friendly, and focused on well-executed classics rather than an oversized menu.

Breakfast and brunch are the main attractions. The menu includes Full Breakfast, Veggie Breakfast, Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, Eggs Royale, Croque Monsieur, Croque Madame, waffles, soup, quiche, sandwiches, and pastries. Recent listings place typical spending around £10–£20 per person. Eggs Royale is listed around £9.95, poached eggs around £6.95, and the steak sandwich around £9.95, while a recent customer report places the Full Breakfast at approximately £12.95. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices are available alongside takeaway, outdoor seating, free Wi-Fi, credit-card payments, table service, and wheelchair access.

A signature first order at Word Of Mouth Leith in Edinburgh is the Full Breakfast. It delivers the satisfying combination expected from a traditional British breakfast, with eggs, breakfast meats, beans, toast, and other classic accompaniments forming a substantial plate. Diners regularly praise the quality of the ingredients, and the dish is substantial enough to fuel a morning of sightseeing around Leith and central Edinburgh.

The Eggs Royale offers a lighter but more elegant alternative. Poached eggs and smoked salmon provide soft, silky textures, while rich hollandaise brings buttery acidity to every bite. Eggs Florentine and Benedict offer similar variations for diners who prefer spinach or ham, making the poached-egg selection one of the café’s strongest brunch categories.

For lunch, the Croque Madame is particularly tempting. Toasted bread, melted cheese, savoury ham, and egg create a crisp, creamy, deeply comforting combination that suits the café’s European influence. A Croque Monsieur is also available when you want the same toasted richness without the egg. Pair either with the house coffee, which customers frequently praise; one recent diner simply noted that “The coffee was excellent.”

The atmosphere is one of Word Of Mouth Leith’s biggest strengths. The interior is small, warm, and casual, with the intimate scale giving it the feel of a genuine neighbourhood café rather than a polished chain. Cakes and sweet treats add another reason to linger over coffee, while outdoor tables provide extra seating when the weather cooperates.

The main limitation is space. A recent August 2026 visitor described the café as cramped, and weekend demand can make seating difficult at peak breakfast times. Arriving early is therefore worthwhile.

For anyone exploring the best restaurants in Edinburgh for relaxed local dining experiences, Word Of Mouth Leith deserves consideration for its generous breakfasts, well-made egg dishes, toasted café classics, strong coffee, and welcoming neighbourhood character. Cozy little cafe with amazing service, great prices, and classic fare. I’m in Edinburgh from the US with my parents and best friend. As it’s my first time abroad, I really wanted to try a full breakfast. This cafe was only an 8 minute walk from our accommodations. The 4 of us were seated quickly, despite it being a smaller establishment and at a busy time. The full breakfast was delicious and included everything I’ve always wanted to try, even the black pudding was pretty good. My Americano was rich and lovely. My friend and stepfather had the Belgium waffles and cleared their plates. Portions were great and the menu is easily one of the most modestly priced in the area. We were also very pleased with the service and care exhibited by the staff…my mom was unable to finish her food and the staff were very careful to ensure everything was satisfactory. You can tell they want customers to enjoy their provisions. Their breakfast and lunch menus are available all day and many of their lunch options looked fantastic!

Reccomendation for everyone staying in Leith, looking for good breakfast and coffee. The staff is friendly and efficient and the food is comforting and tasty. In the five days being on holiday in Edinburgh, I think we had breakfast 4 times here. Simply because the food is good, staff is friendly, and the service is fast and efficient. So just everything you would want in a breakfast-cafe. It's a shame it is hidden around the corner, so not really easy to notice, cause it deserves more visibility... Small tip: the Eggs Benedict are really worth trying!

The croque madame was delightful! The espresso pulls a little on the acidic side, if you like that. Nice atmosphere, prompt service. Happy to have such a tasty breakfast so close to where we are staying.
